Ruth joined Allen & Overy as a summer associate in the New York office. She received her J.D. from Cornell Law School in 2012 and then returned to Allen & Overy in New York as an associate. We asked her the following questions:

What were you initially looking for in a summer associate experience?
When looking at firms as a potential summer associate, I focused on those that had small class sizes with sophisticated and complex work and that took the professional development and growth of their associates seriously. My expectations were met when I joined Allen & Overy.

What surprised you most about the Allen & Overy Summer Program?
I was surprised by how friendly and collaborative everyone was and in fact, by the end of the summer, our class was a cohesive group. We were assured by the Recruitment Department on our first day that there were enough spots to give each of us an offer. Therefore, we were able to focus not on whether or not we would get an offer, but on getting to know our colleagues and on our professional development.

What do you enjoy most about working at Allen & Overy?
What I enjoy the most about working at Allen & Overy is that, due to our relative size, junior associates like myself tend to get more substantive experience earlier and more often than at other places. I also enjoy the cross-border nature of most of the matters we work on, which is one of the major benefits of working at a global and truly international law firm such as Allen & Overy.

How does Allen & Overy differ from other firms in New York?
Allen & Overy’s New York office is small in size compared to some of the other firms in New York, but because Allen & Overy is a major international law firm and a magic circle firm, we have the brand recognition, resources, clients and deal pipeline to rival even the largest New York law firms.

What kind of clients have you had exposure to since joining Allen & Overy?
As a corporate associate I’ve had the pleasure of working with both small and large corporate clients in a variety of industries, including domestic and multinational companies in technology, healthcare, telecommunications, real estate, and the food industry.
